A bulletproof coffee can be a great tool to prolong your fasting window, while supporting your brain performance, hormone balance and ketosis. Do not add to meals, as the extra fat that is beneficial in a fasted state will actually be detrimental if you add it to meals. A pinch of Himalayan salt will boost your adrenal (stress) glands and electrolyte balance.

Yields1 Serving
Cook Time5 mins
1 cup organic black coffee (or organic tea of your choice)
0.51 tbsp organic, pasture raised butter or ghee (avoid if you are dairy intolerant)
0.51 tbsp organic coconut or MCT oil
 1 pinch Himalayan sea salt

1 drop of Bergamot 100% pure organic essential oil (optional)
1

Brew the coffee/tea. The coffee machine should be either out of stainless steel or glass. If choosing filtered coffee, make sure the filter papers are organic, and the filter basket is non-plastic but stainless steel (this is very rare, and as such may limit this choice entirely).

2

Once cooled down slightly, pour it into a glass jar. (Has to be glass, as you wouldn't want to pour a hot liquid into plastics, even if BPA free, they leach nasty chemicals).

3

Add the fat and a pinch of Himalayan sea salt.
Optional: Add 1 drop of Bergamot oil for extra autophagy (cellular renewal).

4

Blend until smooth.

5

Enjoy!

A few side notes:

  • Once you have trained your metabolism to be able to draw energy from fats, and doesn't rely on sugars anymore, you may choose to lower the fat intake to 1 teaspoon of MCT/coconut oil and/or 1 teaspoon of butter/ghee, especially if weightloss is your goal. If you feel you get too hungry/ lack energy when cutting it back, add more back in until your body is fully adjusted and metabolically flexible.
  • If you are dairy intolerant, remove the butter and exchange for ghee. If you are highly dairy intolerant, remove the ghee also, and add more of the MCT/ coconut oil.
  • If you are estrogen dominant and have high overall estrogen levels, you may need to cut back on the fats/ fasting, and add some more protein and cruciferous rich meals back in. Discuss with your experienced Functional Medicine practitioner.
  • The Himalayan salt is especially important if you are stressed (it supports your adrenal glands), or are in a ketogenic state, which requires you to add more good salts into your diet.

DNA tweaks in respect to coffee and caffeine:

  • If you have a SNP in your Caffeine gene, switch to a high quality water-decaffeinated coffee or caffeine-free herbal teas such as rooibos tea, dandelion or chicory ‘coffee’.
  • If you have a double SNP in your COMT gene, and experience symptoms of anxiety, reduce the amount of coffee you drink throughout the day to max 3, especially during times of stress. Ideally no more than 2

A note on conventional coffee capsules/ Nespresso:

I know, they are just oh so convenient. But have you thought about

  • The fact that the coffee used is non-organic. Conventional coffee is one of the most highly sprayed crops, and as such basically a concentrated brew of pesticides.
  • The fact that you push hot water through a plastic and aluminium capsule, absorbing into your oh-so-tasty and convenient (and oh-just-really-not healthy-anymore) coffee.

But wait, you just cannot give up on them? Have a read here for the best substitutes. Make sure they are both organic and compostable.
